With recent political upheaval it is sometimes difficult for those of us far away to realize what beauty exists in Haiti. Instead of the devastation it is good to be reminded of special places and also of youth and the promise they offer. The photos of children bring smiles to our faces and the mountains and rural areas fascinate us. The colors of clothing, the shops and tap-taps are exciting!

When we think of aid after all the calamities, it is easy to think of Port au Prince rather than rural areas. That would be a mistake.

Medical aid, schooling and food are of course needed throughout the country. I was reminded of this today by a friend who mentioned the name of an organization I had heard of long ago, Heifer International, which provides families with livestock and training. Sure enough, they too have a presence in Haiti. Perhaps you would like to know about them too: http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.6351581/

We hope that schools, no matter where they are located, will be able to open soon. As one teacher at CME suggests, “ça aiderait beaucoup aux enfants de se developper et de s’epanouïr.”
