Sending Children’s Books to Haiti and Other “Helpful” Dilemmas

….It is my opinion that now more than ever, us well-off, charitable outsiders need to make a strenuous effort to understand Haitian needs, values and cultural ways of life, from a Haitian perspective, and to help make sure those needs, values, literacies and cultural practices don’t also get lost in the rubble. Like many people, I believe the current situation in Haiti provides an opportunity for rethinking education in that country, and it is my hope that that the education system that emerges in Haiti will be one that is more culturally relevant, authentic, child-centered, liberating, humanistic and permeable to Haitian’s children’s worlds.

Otherwise, Haitian education, Haitian children’s literature, and perhaps Haiti itself, is in danger of being colonized all over again.
