At Ecole Shalom in Croix des Bouquets so much has been going on that little time had been spent on the large space in back of the school building. That is where so much takes place too: laundry dries, goats munch, puppies frolic, cooks prepare meals and wash dishes, carpentry and painting take place, garbage is dumped, and there is an outhouse too.
This is how things looked when I visited back in December. It was organized but the space was not managed as well as it could have been.
This month however there was the arrival of new volunteers, with Patricia at the helm! Full of energy, she decided to tackle not only the garden area, but also began a recycling program with large new compost containers. She enlisted the resident fix-it man, Smoy, to assist her and also to care for the watering.
She began digging…(That’s Patricia on the right!)
And then after all the work, there were rows of planted seeds.
Please send green updates! Is there a fence to protect the plants from goats and dogs? We hope the children can learn about greening their surroundings by watching your efforts and learning to use the composters.
“I’m very conscious of the fact that you can’t do it alone. It’s teamwork. When you do it alone you run the risk that when you are no longer there nobody else will do it.”
