Haiti President Michel Martelly is expected to officially tap his foreign minister Laurent Lamothe to become the country’s next prime minister.
Lamothe, 39, is one of the closest advisors of Martelly. The two have been longtime friends and were business partners in a telecommunications venture before Martelly’s historic candidacy for president.
Martelly was expected to officially present Lamothe’s name during a 10:30 a.m. Thursday meeting with the president of both chambers of parliament, parliamentary several sources confirm.
The nomination comes less than a week after the surprised resignation of Garry Conille, a physician and U.N. diplomat. Conille stepped down after only four months amid tensions with President Michel Martelly and members of his government.
