Cuba and Haiti discuss joint environmental efforts

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba (ACN) — Cuba and Haiti will strengthen bilateral cooperation to implement joint environment protection programs, said Haitian minister for the environment, Jean Francois Tomas, in Santiago de Cuba.At a meeting with local scientific authorities, the Haitian cabinet minister highlighted tasks related to reforestation, specialized training, sustainable food production and the management of natural protected areas.The Haitian minister emphasized the usefulness of Cuba’s support of his country in the struggle against deforestation and in the identification of areas to be rehabilitated. The extent of deforestation in Haiti is enormous and requires urgent and detailed attention, the minister noted.

Haiti belongs, with Cuba and the Dominican Republic, to the Caribbean Biological Corridor, an ongoing regional initiative for environmental protection that has received support from international organizations.

Tomas said that Haiti urgently needs a program to develop means of transportation in mountainous areas, which virtually cover the whole national territory.

Experts from several Cuban environment-related institutions attending the meeting expressed to the Haitian minister their willingness to support his country’s environmental efforts.
