Poor Haiti farmers raise funds for ‘Yolanda’ victims

MANILA – Small farmers from Haiti who were also displaced by hurricane Sandy last year pooled whatever little money they have for fellow farmers affected by super typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan) in the Philippines.

“These farmers are very poor but the gesture from country to country, from farmer to farmer, from human to human, is 1,000,000 times stronger than the actual amount of the transaction,” Philippine Honorary Consul in Haiti, Fitzgerald Brandt told the Philippine Embassy in Washington DC.

Brandt said the farmers, who belong to the Smallholder Farmers Alliance based in Gonaives in the northern part of Haiti, raised $150 for farmers who were victims of Yolanda.
